Momentum for the Psychs on Bikes trans-Australian motorbike epic in April is building. Early indicators suggest a potential field of up to 30 for the two wheeled marathon, with 11 weeks’ marketing left before a key turns in an ignition.

The event is the brainchild of Sydney psychiatrists, Joe Dunn and Oliver O’Çonnell, and psychologist Ross Leonard. It follows a shorter version they and Joe Dunn’s son, Tom, undertook last year when they traversed 2,600km of the Nullarbor Plain on their motorbikes.

This year’s event is bigger, better and longer. More importantly, it is spreading the word about the need for greater attention for Australia’s mental health.

Organisers have approached the Australasian Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health to be recipient of the ride’s fund-raising plan. All participants are expected to raise a minimum of $500 for the cause.

The ride begins at Perth’s Cottesloe Beach on Saturday April 14 and is planned to roll into Sydney’s Bondi Beach the following Sunday (April 22).
