Carers NSW has recently developed an online, interactive resource for people caring for a person with a mental illness. For MHPN network members, the video of carers' experiences could be a useful resource to underpin a network meeting.
The Mental Health Foundations for Carers e-learning tool is based on a two day, face-to-face course originally delivered throughout NSW. It aims to help carers who may have travel and time constraints or live in regional and rural areas. The tool provides information, support and practical resources to carers.
The resource gives practical tips to carers on how to navigate the mental health system, effective communication techniques, and how to look after themselves. It explores common issues faced by carers of someone with a mental illness and effective coping skills.
The resource takes about 50 to 60 minutes to complete in one sitting, but can be accessed one module at a time. In addition to practical information, it also has interactive components and four carer video stories.
